I started this angel portrait about a year ago. I was having problems with her nose and I just couldn't get it right so I put her on the shelf and thought I will come back to her later. Well, now is later and I finally tackled her nose and I think I have it the way I want. I'm still in the process of painting this portrait but I thought everyone would like to see it in progress. The title of this painting is "The Benevolent Messenger".
As I paint this painting my thoughts of world peace inspire me.

My last post I commented on the weather being a bit warm. Well, that has completely changed. Yesterday we were hit with a snow storm., and I hear it will continue until tomorrow eve. Now it feels like January!

I have added three new art pieces in my Etsy store. More items are in the works, a mermaid and then I'll get into making Halloween.

OK, so ....the vertigo turned out to be an inner ear infection. So glad that is what is what it was, because the other things it could have been were pretty scary. Other than accidentally being bit by my dog, it's been a pretty good week. Mayhem lives at my house. :)

Well, it's January but it doesn't feel like it. It has been pretty warm for this time of year here. I'm not complaining one bit! Cool crisp mornings and not too cold afternoons. In the sunshine it's very nice. In the shade well.... let's just stay in the sunshine.

I decided to clean up my studio a few days ago and still haven't finished. Slowly I'm getting there.

Sculpted a small bird. I'll be painting it today.

I guess I should wait a few days before I ride my new bike (Effie). After having some bad vertigo a couple of days ago, I wouldn't want to have a relapse while riding.

It's a new year! The start of each year for me, feels like the start of a new and exciting journey!

I don't make resolutions, but I do write down things I want to work on at the beginning of each year. One of those things this year, a big one for me, is my health. A Christmas present giving to me from my dh has me excited along those lines, a new bicycle! I've been riding it almost every day rain or shine since I got it. It might sound silly but, I just feel full of joy riding it! Along with my health I will be working on having a positive, calm mind.

As for my art, I've been thinking up a storm of ideas for the coming year!
So check back often to see what I'm up too.

I decided not to put everything on it this year. I have some glass ornaments that are older and some glass snow people that are newer. A few plastic snow flakes, but I think they all work together.

The clock is ticking down to Halloween!

I recently visited St. Helens Or. where some of the movie " Halloween Town" was filmed. The pumpkin in town square was glowing and I can imagine this town will be a great haunt on Halloween!

This is Aggie Cromwell's house in the movie. Now it's a bed and breakfast.

The Theater where the evil force almost took over Hallloween town. I found this movie to be a great family film and a Halloween favorite with my kids.

As promised I have a giveaway that will be starting as of today and ending on the 27th of October. Win this small Halloween tree! Hello all ! I am sorry I have been MIA I have had my plate full and it is very hard to keep up with everything. I had three shows this month and I have been working on a project that I hadn't planned on doing. I am back in my studio and happy to have a paint brush in hand!

I hope to be listing some art in my Esty shop soon and on Ebay as well.

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer weather!

Today I want to share a couple of works in progress. A unlikely couple, a large owl, 8 1/4 inches tall and Freida, a day of the dead tribute.

My work in the studio is coming along and I have been adding pieces of art over at the Incolor Gallery. Laura Harmon is the owner and she always happy to help you. I will try to take pictures and share those items as they get done. I have other projects I am working on so keep checking back.

I had mentioned a few posts ago that I would be having a giveaway for a Halloween tree. Yes, the giveaway is still on. I just was wondering what every one's favorite ornament would be and why. I just might make a few ornaments to go on that tree! So let me here what your faves would be.

Well, this post is going to short this time. I have art pieces calling my name and I must finish them or be haunted by them. :)

I have a painting for sale. Titled " Big Red " It is a large 20" x 15 3/4 " mixed media painting on a wooden canvas. I use acid free paper and high quality artist acrylics. There is no framing needed for this painting.

Movies~ Looking forward to "Twixt"

Turkey Burgers

　3 pounds ground turkey
1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cup finely diced onion
2 egg whites, lightly beaten
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 clove garlic, peeled and minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Mix all ingredients together and then form into patties. Grill or cook in a skillet for 8 min on each side approx. . Cook until 180 degrees internal temp.
Use a honey mustard sauce or spice it up with a BBQ sauce!

Recipe~Here's a great summer time salad and my favorite. " Marilyn Monroe Salad".

2 bunches small romaine lettuce

1 avocado

1 cup of cranberries

1 green apple- cut into bite size pieces

1/2 cup of walnuts or almonds

1 1/2 cups of chicken breast meat cooked and cut into bites size pieces

( serves 2 )

add a creamy balsamic dressing and croutons! Yumm!

Recipe~ Tomato Basil Tortellini Soup

Ingredients (serves 4)

1 tbs olive oil
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
One large(29 oz) can of whole tomatoes, roughly chopped, juices reserved
2 cups (500ml) vegetable or chicken stock
250g small cheese tortellini, cooked
1/3 cup torn basil leaves
1/3 cup grated parmesan
Crusty bread, to serve
Heat oil in a large, deep saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook about 1 minute until fragrant.
Add tomatoes and their juice, stock and 1 cup (250ml) water. Bring to a boil and simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes until tomatoes have broken down and mixture is the consistency of a chunky soup. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Divide tortellini among serving plates and ladle in soup. Top with basil and parmesan. Serve with crusty bread. Yummmm!

Summer Fun!

I have been working on a few sculptures, in between having some summer fun! Went to a local turtle pond and I was surprise to see so much wildlife.

Hiking and biking and travel have kept me away from my studio. It's funny, I like to go away and see other places but I really like being at home.

Stampington & Company has published my art! It really is exciting to see your work in such a beautiful magazine as Somerset Studio! I am honored and feel so giddy!

I was torn as to what I was going to create for the submission because well, the classics, there are so many! Poe was a thought and then an image of Moby Dick popped into my brain and I just had to create it.

“ Moby” was a really fun piece to make. You can’t see it in the photo but the body of the whale is raised by adding several coats of gel medium. I like the texture of the wood canvas and how it reacts with the paint.

I would sincerely like to thank Stampington for their recognition, it’s truly awesome!

Our Little Kitty will never be forgot

I apologize for not having posted in such a long time. Between a pet death and me helping my daughter move and landscaping projects, I have been out of sorts. My mother's cat, Kitty passed away. Little kitty had been in our family for 15 years and when I say little kitty I mean little. She weighed four pounds her whole adult life. She was a great cat and we loved her very much. She brought such joy to us and we will never forget her. I planted a dogwood tree in my front yard and we buried her under it. I thought it was a wonderful memorial for her and so did my mother. Goodbye sweet Kitty.

The sun finally came out yesterday and even though it was still cold I sat outside in a chair and enjoyed it. The wind picked up so I retreated to the house. The promise of warmer weather to come, ah yes.

I've been working on some Easter rabbits and chicks. Here's some pictures of the WIP's. They are coming along and soon I will take them to a new store to be sold.

From town to town Melwyn the peddler witch travels bringing her Halloween goodies to all!

Melwyn is a one of a kind witch figure and she has a nice secret compartment for candy or other treasures! She commissioned my studio to create the items in her basket, which include a crystal ball, black cat lantern, spell book, potion bottle, tea kettle and skeleton shaker stick. The lantern she holds to light her way was intricately cut to create a mini version of an old style Halloween paper lantern. Melwyn’s skirt and hat brim are sewn with decorative stitching and the sides of the tunic are laced up through brass rings using leather ties. The hat includes a vintage star button and black silk scarf. Both the hat and dress have been painted and distressed. Material feels like oil cloth or leather. She is 21” tall, but don’t let that fool you her spells are as powerful as many a taller witch!
Price- $375.00- includes shipping.

Springtime is upon us...

I went for a walk yesterday and noticed many flowers blooming, so I took a few photos I thought you might like. Some of you may have a lot of snow still on the ground and I wanting to bring a little spring time to you. We had snow, but now it's all melted away.

We had a lot of robins fly in and completely devour the berries off this holly tree.

I've never seen this many at one time. Happy spring to all !

My scene sculpt is titled "Three Witches"

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

(sounds pretty stinky to me. :) )

This is my vision of the witches from a certain Scottish play. Circled around the bubbling caldron, the three are excited to invoke their spell! The center witch with her amulet chants the incantation while her sister adds another squirming ingredient from her goody bag to the mix. Among the moss, mushrooms grow, lurking back from the embers a small toad and snail hope to slither off before becoming part of the broth. Made with paper clay, wool and other mixed media the work measures 6” tall and 6 ¾ wide. A fun piece to add to your display or to bring out when the season arrives!

This is my first one of a kind piece for 2011.

Owls have always been a favorite of mine well before the movie, Lengends of the Guardians,The Owls of Ga'Hoole came out. (Which I saw and really enjoyed) I think they are beautiful and interesting. According to a magazine article in Birds and Blooms not all owls are nocturnal, grey and northern hawk owls are diurnal, meaning they're awake during the day. Owls can not see in complete darkness, they can see excellently in low light though, dusk and dawn are their preferred hunting times. Not all owls live in the woods. Some live in grassland underground burrows while others live in cati. When I was young I learned the hard way they can be quite territorial. I had one swoop down and grab my hair! I love the sound of the owls when camping and enjoy watching them from a distance. The sillhoette of a owl against the moon is a spooky Halloween image, but also a beautiful one to me.

A pumpkin dressed as a clown!

This is a new sculpture I just finished he will be on eBay tomorrow. He's a white pumpkin dressed as a clown. He has a wonderful crackle finish on him to make him look old. A suprise tea light of different colors lights up his face and possibly your too, with a smile! Mr. Dazzles. He's spooky cute!

The trees here are turning color and they are so beautiful. I really enjoy this time of year. The beauty of the falling leaves and the pumpkins so bright and cheerful. Cool nights, that make me grab a quilt and snuggle up with a hot cup of tea. Ahhh.... Fall.

As you can see I have another piece made and he is a scarecrow. His name is Cornrow. Crazy Cornrow! In the middle of the night his eyes, nose and mouth glow! He! He! He'll be on eBay tonight or tomorrow morning. Have a great day and enjoy this wonderful weather!

The Thistledown Farm

It was a little wet as we headed out to the farm yesterday. We bought honey crisp apples, plums and red peppers, broccoli, lettuce and some really great white peaches. No pumpkins yet! I tried to grow my own pumpkins this year but the dogs torn up some of the vines and then the squirrels did the rest of the damage. So I'll just have to pick some up later. A friend and I went on a hike today and climbed a hill called Mt. David. From the top you can see the valley for miles. The wind was blowing a little but it was refreshing.

I have a schedule!

I have schedule. It may sound funny but I haven't had anything that resembles a schedule for years. I work from my home, a room 13' x14' that is my studio. It's right off my dining room and kitchen. Too, close to the action of family life. I have been battling within myself about time spent with family and working on my art. Feeling torn by what I love to do, making my art and making time for loved ones. In the past my family came first, no matter what. Then about three months ago, I was trying to get something done for a online sale and I just kept getting interrupted. I hadn't made anything for awhile before this , not that I hadn't been trying! One day went by and I didn't have time to work on my art. Then another, then another and finally about a month went by and I hadn't worked on my art at all! I was cranky and upset and I felt like I was going to explode! I found myself writing a response in a art group forum about it and then the light bulb went on! I need a schedule! It's only been three days , but it seems to be working. We shall see how it goes.

I have serveral projects in the works, a witch, a clown pumpkin bust and a scarecrow. Working in paper clay, you have to wait for things to dry. I use a dryer but it still takes awhile. The next piece I will be starting is an owl and I have a great idea I'm working on, so stay tuned.

Cooler Days

The weather has changed here in the valley. I woke up and the clouds have moved in and it's raining very softly. I'm all cozy here in my studio with my dogs, they are curled up in their bed snoozing. My Boston has the loudest snore! Time to put the tea kettle on. I'll take a break and decide which tea I'll
have, lets see....Chocolate caramel enchantment chai, Mango Darjeeling, Himalayan apple spice, Tension Tamer -a.k.a. Dragon Tea (to our family), Passion tea, Goji berry pomegranate or Perfectly pear? Hmmmm..... I think I'm feeling like the Dragon Tea combined with Perfectly pear and a little honey. Have I mentioned I like tea?

My flowers are loving this rain. I also had a visitor in my garden and he jumped on me and I nearly fell over! I love that color of green!

Well, I'm tired and happy as I write this post. Last night was my first Art Walk Show! It was very fun, exciting and successful! I was at Victorianna's Antiques and Costumes on Main Street. The City of Cottage Grove has an art walk at the end of every month and you can walk around downtown and see all the wonderful art. For being a small town we have a lot of very talented people.

Lesley, Victorianna's owner is a well known costume maker and has worked on many big movies! She helped with costumes on "Pirates of the Caribbean". I'm SO jealous!

I talked to a lot of people and I want to thank everyone for coming out and viewing my art.

"The Headless Horseman Rides Again"

The story of “The Legend of Sleep Hollow” has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I especially like the version directed by Tim Burton in the 1998 film “Sleepy Hollow” staring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci . This is my interpretation of the headless horseman.

The hessian solider holds the jack o latern in his gloved hand and the front of his tunic is black soft leather. I sculpted his belt buckle from polymer clay and painted it silver. His cape is black silk and his boots are sculpted from polymer clay.

The white picket fence frames this figures base and I have painted the base with artists quality paint and sealed with a quality matte varnish.

I made five maple leaves to scale for a fall feel.

The rain has been falling in the Willamette Valley for quite some time now and I could really use a little bit of sun. According to the weather report we should be getting a little sun on Saturday. Sounds good to me. With out the rain we wouldn't have the green so.... I guess we just have to keep on walking in puddles.

I have always found the full moon to be beautiful, and I'm really drawn to it for some reason. It's always been a comfort to look upon it. Oh, and the harvest moon so big and orange is something I look forward to seeing every year. It seems to me to be a wondrous power, the pulling of the tides and some say the fore teller of rain. If you see rings that appear around it. The 27th was a full moon and my birthday! I thought that was a wonderful birthday present!
My daughter made me a little birthday cake and my son drew me a picture. It was a great birthday!

Well, I have had a lot of things happen around here to keep me from my studio.

We have a new bathroom! I tiled the tub/shower area. What a job! I am a diy person and I have to tell you this was a little bit much for me. I think it turned out pretty good for an amateur though. ( post pics later)

My husband decided we should move so we could be closer to the things we enjoy doing. Then we looked at what's out there to buy and changed our minds. We have worked on our house for about 15 years to get it where we feel it's almost the way we want it.

1)My mother had Peri thyroid surgery.

2)My son had an extremely infected tonsil, which I had to drive 3 1/2 hours to help him.

3)My daughter got sick with 104 temp.

My brother and sister-in law came for a visit and my husband and his brother ran in a half marathon all at the same time # 1 , 2, 3, were happening. I was spread a little thin.

Needless to say I'm glad all of this has ended. Whew!

Glad to back in the studio. I'm hoping that crossing my fingers is helping.

Hope to be posting some photos of works in progress tomorrow.

Over the river and through the woods!

Over the river and through the woods to Jo James place I went! I drove to Lincoln City yesterday to visit fellow EHAG artists Joee and Dylan (Cart Before The Horse). It was great to talk with them and I also met a very talented artist Deirdra Doan. Deirdra makes the most enchanting dolls.

I found that Joee and I have a lot in common and we look like we could be sisters. We had a wonderful lunch and then she showed us all her lovely eBay offerings. She is such a talented lady and her husband amazes me with his sewing. Together they make such magical art pieces.

We made some little houses from cardboard and fabric. Joee let us pick out fabric from her stash! They look so cute huddled together and made into village.

During the afternoon some deer came sauntering by her living room window. How nice a wildlife parade!

I was sad to leave so soon. As I drove home the sun went down and the moon rose and the sky was a pastel pink and purple. It was beautiful ending to a great day.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends and family!
I was laughing the other day about something I heard on the radio. A small child was asked, what is Thanksgiving all about? He said, "It's when you celebrate eating a turkey!" Too cute. I like to think it's a time for getting family and friends together, to connect with them. Life is so busy and it's a time to remember and be thankful for so many things. My thanksgiving wish for all is
to be reminded of what really counts and no matter what our circumstances are
to cherish our family and all those wonderful moments.

Here she is! I made her a broom so she can fly! I'm not so sure that broom will hold her, but she says it will because it's magic! At night she is the one who is magic. Her head is a lantern and she is also a candy container! She looks great in the dark with her eyes and mouth glowing! I tried taking a picture of her with the battery tea light on but it didn't turn out.

I still haven't decided what I'm going to call this series of vintage style cats. I will ponder on this.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!

Wow! This was one of the best Halloweens ever! I think because it fell on a Saturday most people felt they could stay up late, knowing they didn't have to work the next day. I for one, slept in. ahhh.

I entered a pumpkin carving contest on Friday and I won! I put it out on the porch last night and now I don't know where it is. In the night, some one took it! I didn't get a picture of it and I am kicking myself. It was a owl. Set against the moon. Oh well, next year I will take a picture before I set it out. You live and learn. We had our first Halloween light parade downtown and a cute dog costume contest.

Now, I do have pictures of my Headless Horseman. Due to complication beyond my control I couldn't get it finished until late last night. Finally at last here he is.

Halloween & Vine!!!

I just got back today from the " Fourteenth Annual Halloween and Vine" show. I was like a kid in a candy store! It was fantastic! I met a lot of my fellow EHAG members and many more. It was wonderful to talk to everyone. I wish I could have pictures to post. Sorry, no pictures were aloud to be taken inside the building, but I can tell you that if you like Halloween art this is a must see show!
I talked with collectors in line, and it was so interesting to hear what they like or didn't like in the Halloween genre. Black cats, Witches, Pumpkins and skulls were among the most collected. Everyone one was very excited to get in the door and see what the show had in store for them!

WIP Sleepy Hollow

Well, I promised to post some pictures of my Sleepy Hollow WIP. I said later today but I didn't expect it to be this late. You see, I have a daughter that is moving into her dorm tomorrow and the packing has taken us a little longer than we thought. I have a little more to do on the actually sculpting of the horse and then it's layers of gesso and paint! Then on to the horseman!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I have the music playing here on my blog and for a very good reason. I have a WIP that is going to be a very special piece. I will be taking some pictures and posting them later today! I am very excited about this work and it has been in the making for about six months. I have been working on it between other projects and I feel I can let everyone take a peek now, because it won't be too much longer and I will have it finished!

I have a new item up for auction on eBay today! This is a wood basket I found and it had just the wings on it and cut outs for the bat heads on both sides. I made the handle from pine branches and attached them to the sides. I sculpted the faces of the bats with air dry clay and painted them then attached them. Then I sculpted the picks from polymer clay and painted those. I bought the black roses and a sheer black scarf to fill in around them. I think it turned out pretty cute! It looks better in person.

My Home Town

I took a ride on my bike the other day and I took some photos of my home town. I like the flower baskets hanging up downtown. There are some really nice murals here too. The top picture is our local book store and then third one down is the bakery.
